On May 21, 2009, NORA Executive Director Scott Parker with with Earth911's Sandra Keil, Vice President of Governmental Relations and Business Development. The two organizations share a common interest in increasing the collection of used oil from Do-It-Yourself (DIY) oil changers.
Each year, nearly 200 million gallons of used motor oil are dumped down the drain by the DIY oil changers. This is tragic considering just one gallon - the amount from a single oil change - can make a million gallons of fresh water undrinkable.
Earth911.com provides a searchable database of drop-off locations for items that should be recycled, including used oil. The site's database provideds users access to approximately 40,000 used oil drop off locations.
"NORA looks forward to further discussions with Earth911 regarding DIY oil collections," stated Parker. "We need to explore all methods to ensure that all used oil enters the nation's used oil management system. Every gallon of used motor oil should be responsibly recycled by first being collected and then processed by responsible recyclers, like those belonging to NORA."
